The Iskandarian was invited by Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel to celebrate the launch of its Mid-Autumn pastry, the Mooncakes but with a French-twist – the Éclat de Lune, presented with refined craftsmanship and contemporary elegance to mark the Mid-Autumn season.

Éclat de Lune was inspired by the graceful bloom of florals beneath the moonlit sky, thoughtfully presented in a luxurious blossom-inspired keepsake box that reflects the season’s artistic expression, giving off a romantic ambience in a box of keepsake.

More than just a holiday gift, the collection embodies Renaissance Hotels’ spirit of discovery, bringing people together through authentic cultural experiences, memorable moments, and heartfelt celebrations.

This year’s collection introduces two delightful new Snow skin creations; the Rose Lychee, a delicate blend of fragrant rose and refreshing lychee, and Pandan Cheesecake, where the familiar aroma of Southeast Asian’s pandan meets the rich creaminess of cheesecake.

Chef Ronly Choo, the MasterChef who led the Mooncake team this year, told The Iskandarian that the Rose Lychee flavour was made by combining the classic lotus paste with the flesh of fresh lychee for its filling. More interesting, rose water was used to form the skin of the cake, with dried petals adorning it, making it especially romantic.

She also explained that their Pandan Cheesecake flavour was made with fresh, homemade yoghurt churned by their team, emulating a fresher taste that went well with pandan, making it a new favourite on our table during the tasting session.

These contemporary flavours join an elegant selection of signature baked and Snow skin Mooncakes, including the luxurious Durian Snow skin, which have been thoughtfully curated to delight every palate while celebrating the season’s spirit of sharing.

“Mid-Autumn is a celebration of togetherness, and every Mooncake we create carries that sentiment,” said Muhammad Syafiffi Tahir, Executive Chef, Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel.

“With Éclat de Lune, our culinary team sought to honour traditions that have been cherished for generations while introducing refined flavours and contemporary craftsmanship. The addition of our new Rose Lychee and Pandan Cheesecake Snow skin Mooncakes reflect our passion for innovation while remaining rooted in the heritage of this beloved festival. We hope every handcrafted Mooncake becomes part of our guests’ treasured moments with family, friends and loved ones,” he added.

I am especially delighted to learn that the chefs have recommended us to enjoy the new Snow skin Mooncake flavours with specific Chinese teas to complement it.

For the soft, gentle taste of the Rose Lychee, it was paired with Pu’er tea, known for its earthy, woody taste to ground you from the elevation of the sweet sensation of the Mooncake. It is also a shared birthplace for both lychee and the tea, all the way from Yunnan, China, hence, making it a perfect pair.

While the creaminess of the Pandan Cheesecake was beautifully complemented by the fragrant Jasmine tea, which helps to cleanse the palate and ease the richness, allowing you to continue savouring the Mooncake without feeling overwhelmed. Interestingly, both pandan and jasmine flowers originate from Southeast Asia, making this pairing a unique fusion of Chinese and Southeast Asian influences.
