The 80th Anniversary Celebration of Hua Mui Restaurant (Hua Mui) was held on 8th August 2026, with great enthusiasm at the iconic original premises in Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru.

This eight-decade festivity celebrated Hua Mui’s historic journey since 1946, which has not only become a symbol of local Hainanese food heritage but also part of the collective memory and a tourist landmark of Johor Bahru’s old town.

The ceremony was officiated by Chua Jian Boon, Deputy chairman of the Johor State Unity, Heritage and Culture Committee, representing the Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Chua Jian Boon, in his speech, extended the Menteri Besar’s congratulations to the historical restaurant after David Chiang, the second-generation owner of Hua Mui, made his welcome and appreciation speech.

David, in a true Malaysian spirit, made his remarks in Malay, relaying his gratitude both to the attendees that day and to the Johor society that has supported the restaurant for decades that kept them standing.

“After 80 years, we are able to stand (through times) because of the support and works of the authority and also the trust of all Johoreans,” he said in his speech.

“Hua Mui is not just a restaurant; it is a part of Johor Bahru’s memory.”

“We would continue to honour the Hainan food heritage while keeping on learning on how to preserve it for the next generations to come,” he added, thanking the people that have directly and indirectly helped the restaurant to stand through time until it achieved its 80th anniversary.

Also present were Nor Syazlan bin Abd Razak, Director of the Johor Warisan Foundation, Surani binti Mat Nasir and Nor Aznina binti Mohd Zin as the official representatives of the Director of JKKN Johor, the second-generation owner of Hua Mui Restaurant, David Chiang and Jeremy Chiang, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Glenn Chiang, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hua Mui Restaurant; and guests from various agencies.

Staying true to its identity as a Hainanese eatery that serves the multigeneration of multiple ethnicities, the celebration showcased welcoming Malay kompang, followed by Johor Bahru’s very own 24 Festive Drum troupe’s opening performance and an Indian dance with contemporary song that was a hit among the attendees.

Despite being 20 years shy of its 100th age, Hua Mui kept up with the younger generations by releasing a collaboration clothing line to celebrate the anniversary with local brand Anything JB as well as opening their latest franchise at the hip Sunway Retail Big Box, just days before the celebration date.

Patrons may enjoy Hua Mui’s special anniversary delicacies and play a guessing game with their new beverage marked as the ‘mystery drink’.

Things were kept fresh and interesting with the release of Hua Mui’s very own Hainanese coconut biscuit on the day of the anniversary.
