As the government intensifies efforts to decentralise digital growth, Johor has become a major force behind Malaysia’s digital economy, providing RM44.4 billion, or 51% of the nation’s RM86.7 billion in digital investments reported between January and mid-April 2026.
In order to accelerate the adoption of digital and artificial intelligence (AI) throughout Johor, Melaka, and Pahang, the Ministry of Digital and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) launched the Southern Regional Digital Economy Office (RDEO) at Menara IIB, Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
According to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, the programme positions the southern area as a strategic focus for AI and digital investments and represents a change towards more localized execution of national digital policies. There are currently 199 Malaysia Digital (MD) businesses operating in the southern region, which contributes to a nationwide base of over 4,300 MD-status firms.
Strategic initiatives like the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and Forest City Special Financial Zone (FC-SFZ), which are anticipated to further draw high-value digital investments and bolster cross-border economic integration, are the foundation of Johor’s strong performance.
With an emphasis on promoting business digitalisation, AI adoption, and talent development at the regional level, the RDEO will act as a coordination platform connecting federal and state governments, business actors, and academia, according to MDEC Chief Executive Officer Anuar Fariz Fadzil.
The RDEO is anticipated to accelerate the creation of high-value jobs, boost productivity, and provide access to digital possibilities for communities and enterprises, all of which are in line with Malaysia’s larger goal of increasing the digital economy’s contribution to 30% of GDP by 2030.
