Generating five gigawatts (GW) of solar energy by 2029 provides an alternative for the Johor State Government to fulfil the increasing demand for electricity caused by data centre operations.
Lee Ting Han, Johor state EXCO for Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs, and Human Resources, announced that four gigawatts (GW) of solar energy will be generated in Kota Tinggi and Mersing, with one gigawatt planned for Segamat.
“We welcome the new policy from the Federal Government, which encourages data centres to seek alternative, creative solutions, such as off-grid options. We will permit large-scale data centres to generate their own electricity, subject to applicable regulations,” he said.
Currently, 21 of the 65 permitted data centre projects are operating in Johor, with an estimated energy consumption of roughly 1.1 GW. The remaining 44 projects are now under construction, with plans for an additional capacity of up to 5 GW.
He delivered these statements at the JTDC Mega Job Fair’s closing ceremony, which took place at Iskandar Puteri’s Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC).
