The Johor government intends to fill the remaining 59%, or 1,342 vacancies, at Hospital Pasir Gudang (HPG) by September 2026 in order to return operations to normal.
Ling Tian Soon, chairman of the State Health and Environment Committee, stated that only 41% of the hospital’s 2,271 positions have been filled thus far, involving 929 personnel.
He stated that the hospital is currently operating at capacity while efforts are being made to recruit staff to allow for the full opening of all wards.
“HPG currently runs 14 clinical services, including emergency, general surgery, paediatrics, and orthopaedics.
Due to manpower shortages, only 157 of the hospital’s 304 beds are operational across nine of its 14 wards.
“We are aiming for full bed operations by September, once staffing issues are resolved,” he said.
Ling added that the state government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia, is stepping up efforts to deploy healthcare workers, such as medical officers, assistants, and nurses, in stages.
Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has also raised the issue, calling for the hospital’s operations to be expedited during the recent state assembly opening.
Ling expressed gratitude for the Regent’s concern, pointing out that it has accelerated the state’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
