The Department of Environment (DOE – Jabatan Alam Sekitar) acted swiftly following reports circulating on social media regarding the release of orange smoke believed to have occurred in Jalan Keluli area, Pasir Gudang on 11th June 2026.

Upon receiving the information at around 9.45 am, the DOE enforcement and investigation team from the Pasir Gudang Branch was deployed to the site to conduct monitoring, investigation and an initial assessment of the incident.

Patrolling conducted around Jalan Keluli found no further orange smoke emissions from any premises in the area. However, based on information obtained on-site, the release is believed to have originated from an industrial premise in the Pasir Gudang Industrial Area.

The DOE investigation team arrived at the identified premises at approximately 11:10 a.m. and found that the orange smoke had stopped. Nevertheless, there was a noticeable odour in the vicinity during the inspection.

In this regard, DOE has taken several immediate actions as the following:

  1. Conducting field monitoring and investigations in the reported areas;
  2. Coordinating with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) and the Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) for further action according to their respective jurisdictions;
  3. Requesting a safety assessment from JBPM before detailed inspections are carried out within the premises; and
  4. Carrying out air quality monitoring in sensitive areas that may be affected. As a precautionary measure, DOE Johor State also conducted air quality monitoring at two identified sensitive locations, namely Taman Pasir Putih National Secondary School and Pasir Gudang 3 National Secondary School. Through the monitoring conducted, air quality readings at both locations were within normal levels and showed no readings exceeding the established limits.

DOE wishes to emphasise that a further investigation is underway to identify the actual cause of the incident and to determine whether any pollutant discharge violating the provisions of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 [Act 127] has occurred. Should the investigation reveal any offence under the legal provisions enforced by DOE, appropriate enforcement action will be taken against the responsible parties.

DOE will continue to monitor the situation in the affected area and work closely with relevant agencies to ensure public safety and the preservation of environmental quality. The public is advised not to speculate on this incident and to always refer to information issued by the authorities.
