The Sultan of Johor has ordered the state’s Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and local governments to perform a study on all locations in the state that are regularly affected by flash floods.
“Both parties should deliver their results to me as soon as feasible,” His Majesty said.
One of the biggest causes of flash floods during the rainy season, he said, is a disturbance to the drainage system.
“JPS Johor (Johor DID) and the PBT’s (local authorities) are to immediately conduct a study and present the report to me so that the party responsible can be identified. Heavy rainfall causes flash floods, which in turn will cause property destruction and affect residents,” Sultan Ibrahim told the Royal Press Office (RPO).
His remarks, which were made in response to flash floods that hit many Johor Bahru districts, were also shared on his official Facebook page.
Due to the unpredictable weather, the 63-year-old state monarch also warned inhabitants, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to take precautions.
“In some locations, a high average rainfall might result in flash floods or floods. As a result, residents should exercise caution at all times.”
“At the same time, the District Disaster Management Committee, local governments, and security agencies must always be prepared to take early measures in the event of flooding,” Sultan Ibrahim stated.
After a pre-dawn downpour that lasted more than two hours, numerous locations in Johor Bahru’s district were allegedly damaged by flash floods on 30th September morning.
Prior to it, on 2nd September, flood waters overwhelmed Johor Bahru, Masai, and Pasir Gudang during a seven-hour storm.
Flash floods have always been a problem in Johor Bahru’s low-lying urban districts.
