Sunway Bhd has invested a cumulative RM23 million in SJK (C) Cheah Fah as the Chinese national-type primary school begins the second phase of its expansion in Johor’s southern corridor.
The first of ten Chinese national-type schools approved by the Johor state government, the school opened in 2022 with RM18 million donated by Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, according to a statement.
In less than four years, enrollment has increased to almost 820 students, bringing the school’s current capacity of 1,000 students very close.
In addition to expanding the canteen to hold all of the students at once, the extension will add 12 classrooms and raise the overall capacity to 1,500 pupils.
“Access to high-quality education becomes essential as Sunway City Iskandar Puteri develops into a family-oriented township,” said Gerard Soosay, CEO of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri.
“Education continues to be the most effective means of escaping poverty and the most solid basis for social mobility. He continued, “This expansion guarantees that public school capacity increases in line with population growth.
After a RM1 million fundraising dinner in 2025 that drew over 900 donors, Sunway committed RM5 million to the project.
It is anticipated that construction will be finished by year’s end and won’t interfere with school activities.
Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s largest social enterprise dedicated to education, have adopted eight schools around the country, including SJK (C) Cheah Fah.
To date, Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation have given about RM62 million to these schools’ development.
Additionally, the Foundation has given grants and scholarships totalling more than RM967 million to students nationwide.
