Growing older shouldn’t mean slowing down, or being solely defined by body aches, medications and hospital visits, or sacrificing the things that make life worthwhile. Senior living is currently being reimagined as a new chapter that is characterised by comfort, independence, and the ability to live life as you see fit without burden while also having the appropriate support when you need it. This idea is put into practice at The Straits Resort Medini (The Straits), a first of its kind establishment in Johor Bahru, to make your golden years fun, comfortable and genuinely rewarding.
I was recently invited to experience precious mother-daughter bonding time at The Straits. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed into the tastefully decorated reception area. Modern and inviting, it beautifully blended contemporary design with elements of local culture. We were offered refreshing welcome drinks and cool towels, and as we settled in, I had the pleasure of chatting with Bobby Maheswari, Head of Residency Relations & Marcom, who shared how The Straits is committed in redefining senior living by nurturing and elevating the experience while preserving residents’ independence.
While touring the resort, I couldn’t help but smile of the many bespoke lifestyle options available here which would be perfect for my mother and I to indulge in whether it’s settling in for a movie, sharing a tête-à-tête over our favourite books, or simply catching up over a good gossip at one the many beautiful spaces at the Clubhouse. Each corner has been thoughtfully designed with comfort and connection in mind, and we immediately felt right at home.
Having taken in all the information, our growling tummies were eager to explore what their in-house Chef Nizam had in store

for us at The Straits’ Bar & Brasserie. As senior living is core here, the menu can be tailored according to your special dietary requirements and preferences that supports your health. Either way, the delightful flavours here is something not to be missed out.
Chef Nizam went all out with an Indian-inspired feast, spoiling us with Chicken Madras Soup infused with Indian spices and fresh herbs followed by succulent Prawn Varuval wok-tossed with roasted spices and curry leaves. The spread continued with spicy Squid Sambal, Chicken Tikka Masala simmered in a rich and aromatic tomato-based masala and cream and Aloo Gobi where tender potatoes and cauliflower was gently cooked in mild spices paired with long-grain basmati rice. We ended the meal on a sweet note with contemporary Indian-Malaysian fusion of Bubur Cha Cha spiced with cardamom and pandan.
With a meal so rich in flavours, a stroll along their breathtaking garden designed by Grant Associates, the architectural firm renowned for the iconic Gardens By The Bay in Singapore was a must!

As my mother wanted to take an afternoon soiree, it was time to check in to our two-bedroom residential suite, which offered the perfect blend of style and functionality.
Each residence comes in a choice of one- or two-bedroom layouts, complete with en-suite bathrooms and a well-equipped kitchenette featuring an induction cooker, cutleries, pots and pans, and a microwave. Depending on the suite, residents can also enjoy the convenience of a washing machine, while a cosy living room provides the perfect space to unwind and enjoy some much-needed downtime.
To ensure your peace of mind, each suite comes with safety features such as emergency call systems and fall precaution motion sensors to support independent living for your elders with confidence.
While my mother took a nap, I slipped away to the Clubhouse for a delightful Tea Appreciation session with The Strait’s

Founder and CEO, Elvira Tan, and her friend, Ashley Cotterill, the face behind Tea Bird Tea.
Tea Bird Tea is a premium organic tea brand known for its hand-blended, sustainable and beautifully colourful collection
designed by Ashley herself. What makes it even more special is that the teas are processed and packed right here in Johor Bahru, making them perfect for everyday enjoyment as well as thoughtful gifting.
It was a lovely afternoon discovering the stories and passion behind each blend, and of course, enjoying a few wonderful cups of tea along the way! Elvira was excited to share with me that she hopes to encourage the residents to blend different tea flavours and create their own special concoctions. Beyond the joy of discovering new flavours, the activity is also a wonderful way for the seniors to bond and connect with one another. Each resident will have the opportunity to sample one another’s creations, making tea blending a fun and meaningful way to mingle, share and build friendships.

As the day was still young, and with my mother feeling refreshed, it was time to take it a notch higher at The Straits’ Spa in partnership with Mamaglow. The therapists here first check your blood pressure before deciding which type of massage is best suited to you. Who knew that growing older could mean having more time to be pampered, indulging in a massage under expert therapists, and discovering new passions and hobbies along the way? Perhaps this is one of the joys of ageing; having the time to slow down, treat ourselves, and enjoy the finer things in life. Do take note that spa treatments require prior reservations and are available at an additional fee for the residents.
We ended the evening with yet another culinary creation from Chef Nizam and team which spoiled us with Western flavours from the likes of Crispy Coconut Prawn & Smoked Salmon to Chicken and Salmon Wellington and the refreshing Lime & Mint sorbet palate cleanser and a dessert of Crème Brûlée served with refreshing seasonal citrus fruits for a balanced finish.
As we weren’t ready to retire to bed as yet, we decided to indulge in an old classic, The Sound

of Music, at The Straits’ Movie Lounge. With comfortable reclining chairs and headphones available for those who prefer a more immersive experience, it was the perfect setting for a relaxed movie night. And, of course, no movie is complete without popcorn! As we started to feel a bit chilly in here, the staff at the Straits are really caring as they provided us with cosy blankets so we could snuggle up and enjoy the film. It was a lovely way to wind down after being so well cared for here.
The next morning was dedicated to exploring The Straits’ holistic wellness programmes. Residents can opt for gentle Chair Yoga and meditation, while those unsure of their physical capabilities may consult the clinical team onsite, and undergo a HoloMotion assessment at the Great Hall.

As the first of its kind in Johor Bahru, HoloMotion uses cameras and AI-powered 3D motion analysis without sensors or markers to assess mobility, balance, stability, posture, symmetry, range of motion and gait. Through a series of simple guided movements, it provides a personalised report highlighting movement patterns and potential mobility or fall-risk concerns, helping the clinical team better understand and support each resident’s wellness needs.
After a light-exercise session at the Great Hall and a few rounds at the Shuffleboard table, we were hungry and headed to the Brasserie for a set breakfast packed with proteins and nutrients.
As the Straits is all about vibrant social activities and adventures, my mother and I were

excited to join a cooking class led by Chef Nizam. With all the mouth-watering dishes that we already had, we were eager to learn and show-off our cooking skills to others too. Chef Nizam thought us hands-on to make Nyonya Chicken Kapitan which was surprisingly easy to make. It was not only a fun experience, but also a wonderful opportunity to learn, create and share a delicious meal with fellow residents.
With The Straits located just a five-minute walk from Mall of Medini, my mother and I decided to pop over for some light shopping.

But if shopping isn’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty more to explore. The Straits can curate creative workshops and arrange engaging excursions like durian farm visits, golf sessions or street food tours and other activities, making it fun for residents to pursue their interests, discover new hobbies and stay active.
Before leaving, Bobby and Elvira weren’t going to let us go without more food and lively chit chats; so, Chef Nizam and team whipped out a sumptuous lunch with Nasi Pandan Wangi, his signature Nyonya Chicken Kapitan, Siakap Fish Masak Lemak Daun Selasih, Kam Heong Tiger Prawns, Terung Berlado and Steamed Chap Chye! We were definitely spoiled for choices, but we’re not complaining!

With so much care taken at every step, your elders would feel completely at home here. Encouraging multi-generational visits through their events, parties and meaningful activities, The Straits is definitely a place where residents can stay connected with their loved ones, pursue their passions and explore lifelong learning and make new friends.
Unsure if The Straits is the right place for your elders to have a great kick-start to life? Come over for a tour and experience it for yourself. If you’re over 55 and enjoy independent living without the hassle of home maintenance, housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation, consider a short stay, seasonal retreat or a long-term stay here, as The Straits offers an opportunity to explore, connect and make lasting memories.
