As part of the Iskandar Puteri Low Carbon Community Grant 5.0 programme (IPCC 5.0), 185 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Medini Iskandar Puteri took part in the Environmental Awareness Programme: Wood Waste Circular Economy Model and Wood Upcycling Workshop on 4th September 2025.
IPCC 5.0 project has been awarded funds totaling RM22,000.00 under the scope of Sustainable Waste Management for communities within the MBIP administrative area.
This programme aims to increase environmental awareness among students through various interesting and educational activities.
Faizal Ayob, the project manager and social entrepreneur at REKAYU, gave the kids an Environmental Awareness Talk on the Wood Waste Circular Economy Model to kick off the programme.
After Faizal’s talk, the representative of SW Corp Johor, Akma, gave a briefing on Solid Waste Management, which has been handled by agencies under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry since its establishment. The students were also tested with several quiz questions and they received souvenirs if they answered correctly.
Ruhaizun binti Elias, the Senior Assistant of the Evening Session of SMK Medini, delivered the opening speech, saying that the SMK Medini collaboration programme with REKAYU and SW Corp Johor was very beneficial to the students, and that the ongoing collaboration would be extended to promote wood sustainability at SMK Medini to students, teachers and parents.
The students need a hands-on workshop programme such as woodworking using hand tools and power tools. In fact, this initiative from REKAYU can preserve the environment through the circular economy model that has been introduced.
Through the Iskandar Puteri Circular Community 5.0 (IPCC 5.0) project, it is hoped that the local community is now more aware of waste issues, climate change and the importance of sustainable practices through participation in workshops, exhibitions and community activities.
The local community, particularly the B40 group and housewives, has effectively created extra revenue through the sale of recycled goods and handicrafts made from waste materials by using the circular economy concept. Additionally, the community will be able to gauge its acceptability of the proposed program and be encouraged to participate voluntarily and regularly.
REKAYU hopes that this programme can be expanded to other schools within the MBIP administrative area and the state of Johor through cooperation from the Johor State Education Department under the Johor Sustainable Education initiative: eLestari.
Meanwhile, the cooperation between REKAYU and SW Corp will continue through the Clean Tour programme throughout Johor for 2026.
