A Mid-Autumn Festival without Mooncakes is like Christmas without the tree, it is the season where it is most appropriate to have the sweet, oriental pastry, and a perfect way to send greetings and thoughts to family, friends and business partners.
The remarkable Mooncakes I had last year at Renaissance Johor Bahru made me eager for this year’s edition. Much to my delight, during the Mooncake preview at Wan Li Chinese Restaurant, my eyes first caught the new packaging that elegantly envelops four pieces of Mooncakes that comes with a plastic cutter and instructions on how to keep the pastries fresh.
Chef De Partie, Lim Pei Shi with two assistants, showed us how Renaissance JB’s Mooncakes are traditionally made. “Each of our mooncakes are made fresh daily,” she said, before hitting the table in order to stamp the iconic R for Renaissance atop the Mooncakes.
This year, the opulent and delicate flavour of the Green Tea Paste with Single Yolk and Jade Custard are my favourites among the traditional Mooncake variations.
Traditionalists have the choice of Pure Lotus Paste, Lotus Paste with Single Yolk, Lotus Paste with Double Yolk, Assorted Fruits & Nuts, and Red Bean Paste in addition to other traditional flavours.
While the adventurous or the ones who likes a touch of luxe in their Mid-Autumn delight could select the Musang King Snowskin and the Durian Snowskin Mooncakes.
The Snowskin Mooncake flavours which are more petite and vivid in colours, are my ultimate guilty pleasures as the skin and fillings simply melts in the mouth at first bite, best served cold. I personally enjoyed the Peppermint Truffle which left my mouth fresh at every bite and the Chocolate Crunchy Pearl flavour.

The traditional Baked Mooncakes are priced at RM168 per box of four pieces, Snowskin Mooncakes at RM148 per box of eight pieces while the Durian Snowskin Mooncakes are priced at RM168 per box of eight pieces.
