The world had skipped a year and half of festivities and one of the events that I miss is the buka puasa selections at Renaissance Johor Bahru. It tickled my fancy when I read the invitation ‘Jemput Makan’; literally and politely asking guests to join in their feast with over 400 dishes on offer. Every corner of the BLD Café is filled with servings of food!
I took Chef Frederick Kho’s suggestions and just enjoyed the environment of ‘balik kampung’ in international hotel hospitality. Manoeuvring like a kampung girl I am, my appetiser started off with the piping hot, savoury ‘bubur lambuk’ that reminded me so much of the local community’s hard labour to share servings of porridge for everyone.
Always remember to check out the alfresco side especially Chinese hawkers’ favourites like Oyster Omelette and Carrot Cake which is just right beside the satay and fresh seafood ‘bakar’ section! With regards to the seafood, Chef Frederick Khor said he ensures good sustainable practices by sourcing them from the local market.
Roast lamb is a must for buka puasa season, and it might look odd to mix my chicken rice and Lamb Ribs Biryani Gam, but a little bit of this and that was worth filling the plate with. Balancing the heavy load on carbohydrates is easy with a wide selection of salads from local Ulam and Gado-Gado to Mediterranean Tabbouleh and artisan salad leaves.
