It’s thrilling to finally find out what is serving beneath the name, Lapisan Pâtisserie; the pastries, cakes, and beverage outlet that first opened in The Mall Mid Valley KL almost a year ago, in August 2024, and now has landed in Mid Valley Southkey, Johor Bahru, in May 2025.
Just a few steps from the North Entrance, on the Ground floor, near the Regency Medical Care Centre (RMCC), you could smell freshly baked Croissants and Pain Au Chocolat and roasted coffee at the brightly lit store with Lapisan Pâtisserie emblazoned in earthy, muted colours which is so pleasing to the eyes. I immediately felt drawn in and felt relaxed as I made my way to check what else was baking.
I was privileged to have joined Eyman Lim Lyson, the Senior Operation Manager of Secret Recipe Sdn Bhd for the brand’s taste profiling, along with Mikhail, who is manning behind the counter, welcoming customers with ‘bonjour’ as they grab a bunch of their favourite pastries, coffee and delectable hot meals for dining and takeaway.
Of course, I have to check with Lyson if the word ‘Lapisan’ in the name refers to anything French, and with delight, he said it is truly a Malay word that refers to layers of dough that went in to make their hot-selling croissants. I found out there are more layers in their servings that stuck true to their name which includes the all-day available Lapisan’s Breakfast which I call, Malaysia’s favourite European breakfast comprising a platter of croissant, and sausages resembling the German Weiners, baked beans that reminds you of the English’s staple, potatoes cooked in herbs ala Italy and fresh salad; enough to fill up more than one mouthful.
The Johor Bahru’s outlet in Southkey was said to have more tables for dining compared to their first outlet and Lyson shared, they would like more people to know they are serving hot meals too, like the Lapisan’s Breakfast and Cajun Chicken Egg Pappardelle Alfredo.
The branch in Johor Bahru has opened just in time for their new menu highlights, including the delicately layered Pistachio Bowtie Croissant; a flaky ribbon-shaped croissant filled with pistachio cream, and the Pistachio Cronelé, a cross between a crispy croissant and a French canelé. The Cronelé made its premiere at the Salon Du Pain Festival in Kuala Lumpur, and it is available in pistachio, chocolate, and crème brûlée flavours.
A testament to their French pastries made Malaysian, the Honey Toast is close to the local’s taste of breakfast and snack with coffee and one of the popular items bought, according to Mikhail.
Besides that, the Strawberry Maritozzo is also a choice of many since their opening, understandably so for the mascarpone cheese, fresh Korean strawberries and fluffy bread that just alleviates the mood from the first bite. Be on the lookout for their upcoming Tiramisu Maritozzo, that were said to be just as delectable, especially for those who love the Italian’s dessert and pastry.
I had their chilled Dirty Latte, non-diluted from the ice, straight from the freezer! Refreshing and thick to my taste, with chocolate and cream dancing with the caffeine. Besides the coffee, they also serve fizzy drinks and hot tea and their Matcha lattes are made with Niko Neko’s matcha, ensuring the brand’s dedication to quality.
Mikhail told me that there’s a nurse from RMCC that would get her Rose Latte daily, a soft, fragrant swirl of drink to start her busy day!
Our party of four then imagined the mini version of the national cake; the Petit Chocolate Indulgence cake that is perfect to celebrate a much intimate birthday party or for those who are in strict sugar intake but still wants to have a tiny bit of indulgence.
The price for the pastries, desserts and beverages range from RM6 to RM26.
