In a historic first, the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM), Iskandar Puteri, Johor, has admitted two extraordinary young brothers, Jacob Gew (12) and Isaac Gew (13), into its prestigious engineering programmes. The siblings first gained national attention for achieving a Grade A in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics at just 8 years old, setting a record as the youngest siblings in Malaysia to accomplish this feat.
Now, the brothers are continuing their academic journey at one of the world’s top engineering universities. Isaac has enrolled directly into the Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering programme, while Jacob has joined the Foundation in Engineering programme, making him the youngest student ever to do so at UoSM.
“The Gew brothers are shining examples of what can be achieved when talent, discipline, and passion are nurtured from a young age,” said Professor Ehsan Mesbahi, Academic Provost and Associate Vice President (International) of University of Southampton Malaysia. “We are proud to support them as they begin what promises to be an extraordinary journey in engineering.”
The pair, who hail from an academically accomplished family, have already completed pre-university qualifications, demonstrating analytical abilities well beyond their years. Their exceptional performance in IGCSE and A-Level examinations earned them direct admission into their respective programmes.
Speaking about his ambitions, Isaac said, “My main goal is to complete my PhD as a teenager so I can create something noble that can benefit society, starting from Malaysia.” Jacob added, “I didn’t want to be separated from my brother. For me, family comes first.”
The university’s supportive environment, global reputation, and strong academic framework were key factors in their decision to join UoSM.
The University of Southampton Malaysia congratulates Jacob and Isaac on this milestone and looks forward to helping them realise their full potential as future innovators and leaders in engineering.
