Wesak and Agong’s Birthday are Declared as Official Public Holidays

Find out the replacement date if it falls on a rest day, and whether employees are entitled to payment for working on that date

The government, through the Human Resource Ministry, has announced and set the following dates as public holidays – 31st May 2026, Sunday, for Wesak Day and 1st June 2026, Monday, for Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday, which is made as a compulsory paid holiday and cannot be replaced.

The ministry has also stated that if Wesak Day falls on a rest day (Sunday), it will be replaced with a holiday on Tuesday, 2nd June, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Agong’s birthday is a compulsory holiday for private sector employees.

“Working on a public holiday entitles employees to special payment under the Employment Act of 1955,” the statement said.
