Club for professional women celebrated three years in service

Soroptimist International Club of Iskandar Puteri (SIP) had celebrated its third year anniversary at Sweetwater Mediterranean Restaurant in Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru which saw the official handover of Charter President Nooraini Yasin to incoming President YM Tunku Fatimah Faridah Osman Ahmad and a slideshow presentation of past year’s activities.

“Soro” is Latin for “sister”. The club, a worldwide volunteer service organisation for professional and business women, focuses on education, environment, and women empowerment. Adopting an award-winning programme from their sister school in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, SIP teaches Personal Safety Training to students to learn about their bodies in a fun but respectful way of recognising their own feelings and their own bodies.

SIP also works with a refugee school and organically grow vegetables, harvest rainwater, and compost – all from scratch! Nooraini Yasin, in jest, said that their make-up and zumba classes help reduce the bickering that occurs in a woman’s shelter home – they could be arguing over something at the home, but all come together in harmony during classes!
“We need to help vulnerable children and educate them on what their rights are,” said Tunku Fatimah at her thank-you speech, thanking guests for coming and welcoming collaborations for a better future.

A cheque of RM5500 was handed over from SIP to CSB Rohingya Learning Centre – Kempas to sponsor five Rohingya refugee students. The amount will be sufficient to sustain the students for one year.

The event carried on with dinner and dessert in a casual and cosy atmosphere with women sharing ideas and catch-up sessions.
