Combining urgent humanitarian relief with active environmental stewardship, the Rotary Club of Johor Bahru (RCJB) successfully executed its flagship Merdeka Charity Project 2026 this morning at Kampung Orang Asli Teluk Jawa.
The initiative provided essential off-grid solar power kits and commercial firefighting equipment alongside practical safety training, complemented by a major coastal clean-up that cleared approximately 266 kg of marine debris and refuse.
On 12 February this year, a devastating blaze swept through Kampung Teluk Jawa, destroying more than 30 wooden stilt homes and displacing 37 families.
Although the villagers demonstrated remarkable resilience by rebuilding on-site and municipal water supply was restored by May, the settlement has faced ongoing hardship without a regularised electricity supply during this transitional rebuilding phase.
Addressing this critical gap, RCJB conducted technical ground assessments with engineers starting in July to deliver a comprehensive humanitarian aid package designed to uplift living conditions, improve community hygiene, and prevent future disasters.
Speaking at the handover, Rotary Club of Johor Bahru President Saravanan Krishnan highlighted that the initiative represents a balanced commitment to human dignity and ecological care.
“The true spirit of Merdeka lies in collective empathy and ensuring no community is left behind, particularly during recovery,” said President Saravanan. “This initiative goes beyond basic material aid; it is a focused humanitarian mission to restore safety, self-reliance, and dignity to these 37 families. At the same time, sustainable recovery requires caring for the fragile coastal environment that sustains this village. By replacing hazardous open flames with clean solar energy and rehabilitating the shoreline, we are helping the community build a safer, cleaner, and more resilient future.”
He added that safeguarding the timber settlement against recurrent disasters was an urgent priority: “Equipping the village with commercial-grade 9kg ABC dry powder fire extinguishers establishes immediate frontline defence, allowing residents to respond decisively during early-stage emergencies.”
To ensure safe daily adoption, the RCJB delegation conducted on-site demonstrations, guiding families through optimal solar panel placement, charging routines, and basic wiring setups. Concurrently, the team staged a practical fire safety session, guiding residents through the standard pull-aim-squeeze-sweep technique to ensure household heads possess the confidence and capability to protect their homes.
Demonstrating their shared commitment to environmental care, RCJB mobilised youth volunteers alongside local villagers in a coordinated Gotong-Royong. Supported by Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB)—which provided logistical amenities, including canopy setups and a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) waste container—the team cleared living walkways and intertidal mudflats, removing 266 kg of accumulated waste.
