Regency Specialist Hospital (Regency), part of HMI Medical, has implemented its Next-Gen Smart Ward, a pioneering step in reforming patient care standards through technology – enhancing comfort, safety, and efficiency in healthcare. Underpinned by a philosophy that blends technology with empathy at its heart, the Next-Gen Smart Ward harnesses advanced digital systems, automation, and real-time monitoring to transform the way nurses, doctors, and patients interact, ensuring faster, safer, and more personalised care. The Next-Gen Smart Ward management system was developed in collaboration with the Chang Gung Medical Foundation, with Taiwan’s Lanseed Medical Group providing software development expertise.
“This launch represents more than just technology; it is about reimagining how we deliver care in ways that empower both patients and healthcare professionals,” said Serena Yong, CEO of Regency Specialist Hospital.
“The Next-Gen Smart Ward, the first-of-its-kind in Johor is designed to create an environment where efficiency supports compassion, so our healthcare teams can dedicate more time to the human connection that lies at the core of healing.”
To mark the launch of the Next-Gen Smart Ward, the hospital also held a Smart Hospital Forum, which brought together healthcare leaders, clinicians, and technology partners to explore the future of digital healthcare delivery.
At the core of the Next-Gen Smart Ward is a focus on supporting nurses, ensuring efficiency and reducing redundancy. At Regency, the Next-Gen Smart Ward system covers six components, including Nursing Dashboard (Smart TV), Smart Patient Bedside Terminal, e-Paper Display, Automated Vital Signs and Anthropometric Measurements Integration, Nurse Mobile Phone Application Access and the Smart Ward Nursing Cart.
The system provides real-time data and streamlined workflows that strengthen care delivery and enables the following:
Less paperwork, more patient time – nurses spend 67% less time on manual data entry, allowing greater focus on bedside care.
Faster action – real-time alerts and safety protocols improve response times by 16% and reduce errors.
Better teamwork – centralised dashboards enhance communication and coordination across care teams.
The Next-Gen Smart Ward also delivers additional core benefits for patient care, including empowering patients with greater involvement as bedside terminals allow patients to request assistance, view their care plans, and easily access health education resources.
More importantly, improved safety is ensured through automated alerts for fall risks, medication updates, and critical lab results, facilitating timely staff intervention. This enhanced efficiency ultimately provides more comfort and confidence for patients.
The Next-Gen Smart Ward at Regency is the result of a strategic global collaboration, primarily drawing expertise from the Chang Gung Medical Foundation in Taiwan, one of the world’s largest and most advanced academic medical centres. Globally recognised for its leadership and innovation in smart hospital technology, including Asia’s first Proton Therapy Centre, Chang Gung provides the framework for redefining patient care standards. This strong, long-term commitment to knowledge exchange and digital transformation was formalised through a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between HMI Medical and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
In Malaysia, the collaboration was seamlessly realised through Origin Integrated Studios. They successfully integrated Regency’s existing Hospital Information System into the Next-Gen Smart Ward ecosystem, enabling real-time data display and efficient workflow automation. Collectively, these partnerships highlight Regency’s position as a leading healthcare hub in Southeast Asia, connecting global medical expertise with vital local innovation to deliver safer, smarter, and truly patient-centred care for communities across the region.
Beyond a technological upgrade, the Next-Gen Smart Ward underlines Regency Specialist Hospital’s commitment to care that is safer, smarter, and deeply human. By integrating global expertise with local insight, the hospital is setting new benchmarks for healthcare, driving innovation while keeping empathy at the centre of every patient experience.
The Next-Gen Smart Ward embodies the principle of ‘beginning with the end in mind’, prioritising patients, families, and staff to achieve high value. This foundation for evidence-based growth provides a ‘triple win’ i.e. dignified care for patients, meaningful work environment for staff, and sustainable hospital advancement. Ultimately, the initiative underscores the fact that technology enhances, rather than replaces, the human element of care, reinforcing empathy and compassion.
