New features and upgraded security are among the reasons for Malaysia to enforce a new design of MyKad and passport this year.
News reports have said that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail made the statement in a press conference after the Home Minister New Year address at Putrajaya.

MyKad and new passport would be available by the middle of 2026
The Immigration Department and the National Registration Department are said to introduce the new Malaysian passport and new MyKad by the second quarter or early third quarter of this year.
According to Saifuddin, both documents are classified as security documents and must be updated on a regular basis to address changing risks, such as counterfeiting.
New Features and Security
Among the things enhanced in the new documents are advanced security features to further strengthen their reliability and integrity.
These improvements include upgrades to design and security technology, including layered digital authentication elements to combat forgery and misuse of identity documents.
No Rush to Replace Current MyKad and Passport
Currently being developed, the public do not need to hurry to replace their current documents.
Saifuddin Nasution added that existing passports and MyKad will remain valid until their expiry.
“Continue using your current documents until they reach their expiry. Replacements will only be necessary at that time.”
“Details on the implementation schedule, updated features, and additional announcements will be provided in due course,” he said.
Saifuddin stated that the ministry would notify the public early, approximately six months in advance, to avoid people rushing or panicking while applying for new passports or MyKad.
Details on new security features and implementation dates would be released after preparations are completed, he added.
