Symbolic gesture of environmental commitment at the Asia-Pacific Climate Week 2023

The heavy downpour was no obstacle for the Asia-Pacific Climate Week 2023 delegates who were determined to be part of the tree planting ceremony at Sireh Park, Iskandar Puteri on the 13th of November 2023.

Held on the first day of the convention, the ceremony exemplified the commitment to combat climate change through tangible actions. This initiative aimed to raise awareness and underscore the importance of sustainable practices.

Over 2,000 delegates from over 100 attended the APCW 2023 held at Persada Johor International Convention Centre in Johor Bahru from 13th to 17th November. Delegates representing countries such as Malaysia, France, Nepal, Sweden, Ukraine, Lebanon, Japan, India, Philippines, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and others, joined this event.

Angela Asuncion, a consultant from Philippines said the tree planting ceremony was not just a symbolic gesture to her but a powerful reminder of the actions the people could take today as it ensures that future generations can have a better environment during their time.

“Our commitment is rooted in a shared inheritance of natural resources, aiming to preserve the beauty of Mother Nature for generations to come,” she said.

In a show of solidarity, Lee Ting Han Chairman of the Investment, Trade, and Consumer Affairs Committee of the State of Johor (Official Representative of the Johor Chief Minister), Dato’ Haji Mohd Jafni bin Md Shukor Chairman of the Housing and Local Government Committee of the State of Johor, Dato’ Haji Mohd Noorazam bin Dato’ Haji Osman Mayor, Johor Bahru City Council Dato’ Haji Mohd Haffiz bin Haji Ahmad Mayor, Iskandar Puteri City Council, Dato’ Asman Shah Bin Abd Rahman Mayor, Pasir Gudang City Council, Haji Muzaldin bin Mohamed District Officer, Johor Bahru, Datuk Pandak bin Ahmad State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Kota Iskandar including United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Programme Coordination Manager Niclas Svenningsen also joined the Tree Planting Ceremony, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship.
