CSR Kerry Malaysia took part in the 36th edition of the Free Market Project organised by Free Market Johor to coordinate and disseminate aid to the urban poor communities in Pasir Gudang.
“The objective of this collaboration is to position and support Kerry in marketplace and community sustainability with the mindset of securing sustainable growth. We have invited all Kerry employees to be involved in this noble act to serve the local community, and had about 20 Kerry employees volunteering at the Free Market,” said Prabageran Thiagarayah, SEA Continuous Improvement Manager at Kerry cum Chairman of CSR Kerry Malaysia.

Free Market Johor (FMJ), a winner of the Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards (IMSHA) 2019, is a non-government organisation that coordinates aid activities for the needy and less fortunate. Targeting the urban poor, which is becoming an evident first world problem, the coordinators at FMJ will engage with select urban communities who fall below the average income group (B40) to receive aid.
The activities carried out by FMJ are a form of charity that is carried out uniquely where they are similar to a regular flea market, but visitors are welcome to take home any item on display for free.
The organisation identifies the target community and families by engaging with the community heads in survey and discussions before proceeding to crowdfund resources for the free market.
“We started in December 2015 and this is our 36th Free Market. We are happy contribute back to the society and we don’t expect anything in return. Just a simple “thank you” and blessed prayers from the families whom we have aided is enough for us to carry on,” said Zaharah Raishan, coordinator of the Free Market Johor.
“This is the first time we are working with a partner and we are lucky to receive contributions from Kerry and its employees,” she added.
Other volunteers present to assist with the free market include staff and employees from Kerry, PERKESO, as well as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
