After the decree of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim to close schools in Johor due to the worsening haze since 8th October 2026, the schools are now set to open in phases beginning 26th October 2026 as haze condition improves.
Dr Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali, head of the Johor Education and Information Committee, in a statement dated 25th October 2026 said the state government has decided the First Phase will have the schools open on 26th and 27th October 2026 (Monday and Tuesday), with attendance limited to students required to sit for examinations according to the established schedule.
The period is said to also allow school administrators and teachers to make necessary preparations for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations and the Final Academic Session Assessments (UASA) as scheduled.
He then said that the second phase will commence on 28th October 2026 (Wednesday), with all schools across the state of Johor scheduled to resume full, normal operations, subject to current developments regarding air quality.
“Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) will coordinate the implementation of health and safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) including the wearing of face masks and the monitoring of school activities based on current Air Pollutant Index (API) readings and applicable guidelines.”
“The Johor State Government, in collaboration with relevant agencies, will continue to monitor the haze situation to ensure that any further necessary actions can be taken based on an assessment of the prevailing conditions,” the statement said.
