From Lab to Life: Turning Research into Real-World Impact

The Merdeka Award Trust (MAT), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), hosted the 2026 Merdeka Award Talk Series (Campus Edition) on 20th July, bringing together leading researchers, educators and emerging innovators to explore how academic discoveries can be translated into meaningful solutions that benefit society and drive national progress.

Held with the theme From Lab to Life: Turning Research into Real-World Impact, the programme brought together some of Malaysia’s finest academic minds, educators, and emerging innovators to inspire over 100 students, young researchers and faculty members, providing a platform for dialogue on bridging the gap between scientific research and practical application.

The Merdeka Award Talk Series was established to foster thought leadership, intellectual exchange and a culture of excellence among Malaysians. This Campus Edition is designed to address a vital challenge in Malaysia’s current scientific ecosystem: transforming static academic research papers into tangible, real-world solutions that yield direct societal and economic benefits.

The high-impact panel discussion that was moderated by Dr Abdullah bin Mohd Nawi, Manager, External and Global Engagement, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UTM featured a distinguished lineup of visionary speakers, namely:
● Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr Ahmad Fauzi bin Ismail, a world-renowned authority in membrane technology and higher education leader.
● Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr Noraini Idris, an accomplished educator, curriculum specialist and a leading force behind national STEM education initiatives.
● Syaza Soraya Sauli, a prominent emerging researcher representing the next generation of agile Malaysian scientific talent.

The panel explored the journey of moving a hypothesis from theory to practical application through multi-sector collaborations, national policy adjustments, and strategic industry partnerships. The speakers shared their personal career journeys, shedding light on how young researchers can navigate the modern funding landscape, overcome experimental failures, and cultivate long-term project sustainably.

The Merdeka Award Talk Series (Campus Edition) reflects the MAT’s commitment to inspiring the next generation to look beyond academic metrics and pursue research that delivers meaningful, real-world impact. The theme From Lab to Life was intentionally selected to emphasise that breakthrough discoveries should not remain confined to academic papers but be translated into practical solutions that benefit society, strengthen the economy and inform public policy. The Talk Series are held across various regions in the country to decentralise intellectual exchanges, broaden access to knowledge-sharing opportunities, engage talented young minds and foster a truly nationwide culture of excellence.

Following the main panel dialogue and interactive audience Q&A, the event featured a specialized, hands-on masterclass titled Mission-Oriented Research: Practical Tips for Proposal Development, delivered by Nitia Samuel, Chief Strategy Officer of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM). The framework-sharing session provided the university crowd with highly strategic takeaways on how to effectively frame research problems, avoid common grant-application mistakes and structure winning proposals capable of attracting both local and international funding.

The Merdeka Award Talk Series will continue its mission to engage communities and cultivate next-generation leadership throughout the year.

The Merdeka Award Trust was established by PETRONAS and Shell on 27th August 2007, to recognise and reward excellent individuals and organisations whose works and achievements have not only contributed to the nation’s growth but have also inspired greatness in the people of Malaysia in the following categories – Outstanding Contribution to Education and Community; Outstanding Contribution to Environment and Planetary Health; Outstanding Contribution to Humanities, Arts and Sports; Outstanding Contribution to Science, Technology and Innovation; Outstanding Scholastic and Academic Achievement, and Anugerah Khas Merdeka. In 2022, Anugerah Harapan Merdeka was introduced to recognise the efforts of Malaysians aged 40 years old and below or Malaysian organisations less than 10 years in inception.

The choice of name, Merdeka Award Trust, reflects the Founding Members’ aim to commemorate the true spirit of independence, which transcends the conventional definition of national sovereignty. It explores the liberation of the mind and spirit – factors that foster the realisation of human potential and the pursuit of excellence.
