Johor Construction Awards (JCA) 2020, a rebrand of Anugerah Kontraktor Johor (AKJ) hosted the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between Johor Centre for Construction Development (JCCD), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) at Fraser Place Hotel, Puteri Harbour, Iskandar Puteri. The ceremony was witnessed by Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Ir. Haji Hasni Mohammad, Johor State Secretary, Azmi Rohani. Also in attendance were MBOT’s President Datuk Ir. Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir and JCCD’s CEO, Ekmaluddin Mohd Ishak. 

The MoU will accelerate Johor’s building sectors towards materialising Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) by establishing research and development for infrastructure’s industry in Johor, updating contractors, projects and contract management data with IEM, inaugurate railway expertise with UTHM’s Industry Centre of Excellence for Railway (ICOE-Rel) and empowering the technologists and technicians in Johor with MBOT.

Johor Menteri Besar, Hasni, who was awarded the certification of Professional Technologist by MBOT in the ceremony said in his speech that mega infrastructures in the state that is expected to multiply in the future should be given to the local construction companies based on the expertise, competency and experience, leaving the ‘queue number’ system in the past. He also stated the need for smarter use of data awareness among construction companies as it would help measure competency and addressing areas that are in need of upskilling and reskilling in the effort to make the state’s building sector stay resilient and competitive at the global scale. 

JCA 2020 ceremony has recognised contractors of 14 categories from G1 to G7, including 6 special awards. Among the winners are Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor (KPRJ)’s Dato’ Noorazam for Government Infrastructure Project category, Marina Ibrahim of Pembinaan Salleh for the JCA Women Contractor category and Dato’ Daing A. Malek for the special, Menteri Besar Awards.
