According to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the implementation of two projects to upgrade the Pasir Gudang Highway (FT17) including road widening is expected to reduce congestion on the route.
He stated that the two authorised projects, totaling RM5.2 million, will be performed in phases, namely Phase 2B and Phase 3, and would comprise enlarging the four-lane route to six lanes.
Nanta stated that Phase 2B, which will connect the Bandar Seri Alam/Taman Rinting intersections to the Pasir Gudang intersection, is already under development and will be completed in October 2025.
Work on Phase 3 (from the Perling junction to the North-South highway) is planned to begin in August of this year, he noted.
He added that the two projects’ upgrades would include 12.5 km of road widening as well as repairs and upgrades to the existing flyover, bridge, and flyover structures.
After reviewing the status of the highway’s upgrading and maintenance work, he told reporters that these projects are a continuation of the Phase 1 upgrading project, which was finished in 2016 and Phase 2A, which was completed in 2018.
Every day, an estimated 95,000 automobiles utilise the highway.
Nanta, a Kapit Member of Parliament, said the Federal Government has set aside RM107 million for road maintenance in Johor this year, with RM5 million going towards repairing the Pasir Gudang highway.
Nanta said he would look at the state’s needs before deciding if the ministry would make an additional allocation to Johor.
Earlier in March, the state Public Works, Transport, and Infrastructure Committee chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, was quoted as saying that the state government had requested an additional RM168 million through the Public Works Department to repair flood-damaged roads and public infrastructure.
