Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) organised a roundtable discussion on the topic of sustainability in business in collaboration with the Johor office of the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB). MBPG is the first city council in Malaysia to engage UNGCMYB, which is the local office of the United Nations Global Compact, to engage the business community in the constituency.
The session brought together industry leaders to share best practices, discuss challenges and opportunities, and develop collective strategies for promoting sustainable practices in the constituency.
The roundtable is in line with MBPG’s ambition to attain a low-carbon and smart city status by 2025. To achieve this goal, MBPG recognises the need for companies operating in the constituency to operate responsibly in terms of the Environmental, Social and Governance or ESG. Adopting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) puts companies on a pathway of conducting business in a more responsible manner.
The roundtable provided participating companies with several benefits such as information on reporting standards, greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon footprint calculation tools, freely available tools and resources for companies, best practices to keep in mind, and common challenges faces by other companies. The session also raised the awareness that by adopting the SDGs and ESG, companies can ensure that they are prepared for a future in which sustainability is even more important, helping them remain competitive and successful in the long term.

The development of Pasir Gudang does not only prioritize the economic aspect, but also concerned with a healthy social environment that reflects a dynamic administration. This is synonymous with our ‘Dynamic Pasir Gudang, industrial city and port’ slogan” said the Mayor of Pasir Gudang Dato’ Asman Shah Bin Abd Rahman
Overall, the goal of the roundtable is to facilitate a productive and informative discussion that helps participants learn from each other and work together to address sustainability challenges and opportunities while working collaboratively with MBPG.
“The session is an excellent opportunity for companies operating in the constituency to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability while also networking with other industry leaders and developing collective strategies for promoting sustainable practices in their business,” said Edey Suresh, Johor State Director of UNGCMYB.
