Traditional kuih-muih that would bring you back to the time at home in kampung

The name ‘Pendas Cafe’ of Sunway Hotel Big Box reminded me of how much care Sunway Iskandar had for the Pendas river that is situated nearby that they even dedicated the main eatery to the said river that has preserved so much ecosystem despite the development of the town. The Pendas Café kitchen is also halal certified.

It’s my first time at this hotel and newly appointed Chef Jamaluddin Sadikum said it is also the hotel’s first time to host a buka puasa buffet. Chef Jamaluddin brought his experience from Sunway’s flagship hotel in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur including stints with international hotel chains and with great enthusiasm answered a few questions of mine.

Kambing Golek Nabawi or Nabawi Roast Lamb is my new favourite – the crispy skin has a defined flavour and it turns out to be marination made of dates in replacement of honey. You could taste the tender lamb mixed so well together with the Nasi Arab accompanied with some Raita (yoghurt-based sauce) and tomato sides. It’s all in the science as the broth of the roasted lamb was used to cook the rice, replacing the usual ghee. A taste that is unique to the hotel’s buffet.

Ten out of ten people I have asked around about the Gearbox Soup have agreed that the double boiled-bones soup is delicious to have just on its own or with rice or bread.

10 out of 10 people I asked shared the same thoughts about this gearbox soup – would want a second and more

Then, after much time spent ravishing the savoury and piping hot Asam Pedas Ikan Siakap, I had cut fruits on a stick like a popsicle, simply because I needed the fibres and it is a good way to trick my brain that I am having ice cream!

Washing down all the food intake with their own bazaar’s beverages mock ‘Air Balang’ (beverage in tanks) gave me a surreal experience of a hotel buffet and Ramadan bazaar blurred into one. Don’t forget to indulge in some freshly baked cakes and traditional kuih-muih to end the dinner.
