The Johor government handed monetary incentives to Johor athletes who competed in the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and among them was Chew Wei Lun, a silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Chew was given an RM15,000 reward for winning a silver medal in the boccia event, in addition to his participation in the games, while another paralympic athlete, Siti Noor Iasah Mohamad Ariffin, was given an RM5,000 bonus for competing in the T20 athletics event.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ir. Haji Hasni Mohammad delivered the incentive in the presence of Johor Tourism, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Johor State Sports Council director Nor Syazlan Abd Razak.

Hasni stated that the state government will work to improve sports facilities in response to the rise of athletes who have created a name for themselves on the international stage.

“The government will also look after the welfare of athletes. Therefore, the role of sports associations is very important in helping athletes so that their achievements can be improved,” he told reporters after the presentation of the incentives.

Hasni stated that sports organisations play an important role in the survival of athletes, particularly when they are unable to participate due to age or health, and that their expertise and knowledge should be used to advance sport’s development in the future.

Apart from Chew and Siti Noor Iasah, two coaches earned RM5,000 each; Sallehudin Mohd Noh (cycling) and Muhammad Ashaari Zainal Abidin (tennis).

The same incentive was also given to Tokyo 2020 Olympic athletes Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, Nur Aisyah Jamil (sailing), Kelly Tan Guat Chen (golf), and Syaqiera Mashayikh (cycling) (archery).
