Malaysia’s vulnerable and high-risk populations will receive the COVID-19 booster injections after more than 80% of the adult population have been properly vaccinated. Currently, about 78.2% of adults have been fully vaccinated in Malaysia under the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated that “When adult vaccine coverage reaches 80%, the front-line personnel, the immunocompromised, and the elderly with comorbidities will be prioritised for booster injections.”
“The third dose can boost immunity levels among individuals at high risk for COVID -19 infections, as immunity levels may fall after a specific length of time,” he added.
Malaysia expects to completely reopen its economy and shift to an endemic phase of the disease by the end of next month when all people will have been properly vaccinated. This will clear the path for the under-18 population to receive their vaccines.
According to Ismail, the Ministry of Health would be administering the booster shots.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin stated that the booster injections will be distributed early next month and that this would be expanded to other groups once those designated for the initial stages had had their third shot.
