The 2021 Create@ Alibaba Cloud Startup Contest (ASEAN Region) was officially launched on 1st September 2021 at Create@ Virtual Exhibition Hall.
The competition under the theme ‘5G + Internet of Things Track Global Startup Contest’ was jointly organised by Alibaba Cloud, Handsprofit – Alibaba Cloud Innovation Centre KL (Malaysia) and co-organisers Big Wheel and My Lives.
First held in 2015, covering nearly 100 cities in more than ten countries around the world, the competition has gained a reputation of the “Olympics” in the field of venture capital. Malaysia participated in this competition for the first time in 2019 (It was closed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The preliminary round of this competition will be held on 10th September and the semi-finals will be held on the 15th of September. The ASEAN regional finals will be held on 22nd September and the global finals will be held on the 28th of September (live broadcast). Winning start-ups will represent ASEAN in the global finals in Hangzhou, China. The timing was reshuffled after its pre-launch announcement earlier.
The opening ceremony of Create@ Alibaba Startup Contest 2021 was launched by Dato Lim Wern Siang, Managing Director of Handsprofit Sdn Bhd, Managing Director, Michael Chang, Corporate Strategy Advisor cum Organising Chairman of Handsprofit Sdn Bhd, Jordy Cao, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Malaysia, Yilan Zhuang, Head of Marketing & Online Business of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Malaysia, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Director of Air Asia Group Berhad, Natalie Cheng, Parkson Holdings Berhad – The Lion Group Executive Director and Tengku Munazirah Shah, Founder of The HOPE Factory Malaysia.
A sharing session was also held with the honourable guests during this first half of the event launch where Tony Fernandes talked about ‘Climbing Out of The Valley’ giving his piece of advice with “Restructure, redo your cost base, relocate your market vs what the public wants and adapt quickly, stay positive, stay hungry, stay as a fighter, never give up and go for a challenge.”
During the second half event, there were 3 special guests who shared their experiences in their respective fields; Tan Aik Keong who talked about ‘Blockchain for Enterprise’, Captain Koh on ‘Exponential Technologies – 10 X Innovations’ and Richard Ker who spoke about ‘Combination Drone & AI Technology’.
