According to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, agencies under the Transport Ministry have been directed to gather the names of e-hailing drivers and p-hailing riders across the country for vaccination purposes.
Wee believes that as frontline workers servicing the public during the lockdown, they should be given priority in terms of vaccination to protect their own and their customers’ safety.
“There are some 100,000 e-hailing drivers and 50,000 p-hailing riders serving with e-hailing operators like Grab now.
As I have announced before this, the scheduling process of vaccination for taxis and e-hailing drivers, as well as p-hailing riders, is underway, which will start with about 41,488 taxi and e-hailing drivers and 11,527 p-hailing riders,” he said in a Facebook post.
Wee said that he realised the transportation sector remained a crucial 24-hour service during the execution of the Movement Control Order (MCO) to ensure that people across the country could receive their daily supplies and goods and passengers to be able to travel.
He also added that his ministry was collaborating with the COVID-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) to ensure group immunisation as soon as possible.
“We expect and hope that with everybody’s cooperation, the public transport drivers will be vaccinated by the end of August,” he concluded.
