Deputy Director of Johor Education, Shahilon Abd Halim in a statement on Johor’s overall results for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) dated 10th June 2021 said that the state of Johor has seen an increase in the percentage of candidates that are eligible for a certificate – 88.13% in 2020 compared to 86.43% in 2019, and maintains the GPN index of the State of Johor in 2020 at 4.68.
The nationwide test was held from 22nd February to 25th March 2021. However, there were some candidates who were unable to take the exams due to the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result, from 6th to the 23rd of April 2021, the Test Board held a written examination for the second session.
Candidates from Johor enrolled and tackled a total of 70 topics. 366 test centres were available with a total of 4,089 examination staff, including Area Supervisors, Chief Invigilators, Deputy Chief Invigilators, Invigilators, and Room Cleaners who worked to oversee the smooth process of the examination.
In Johor, 49,472 school students had enrolled to sit for the SPM examination in 2020, compared to 50,661 students in 2019.
According to the results of the 2020 SPM, 58 schools in Johor received 100% approval and are eligible for certificates covering both urban and rural schools.
From the achievement, Sekolah Menengah Sains Kota Tinggi showed excellent performance for the Full Boarding School category by obtaining an average grade of 1.23, the overall excellent students with all A’s were 52 candidates.
Rural Day School category:
SMK Dato ‘Penggawa Timur, Pasir Gudang had an average grade of 1.82 with 33 excellent candidates (All A’s).
Urban Day School category:
SMK Infant Jesus Convent Johor Bahru had an average grade of 1.85 with 38 excellent candidates (All A’s).
Religious National Secondary School category:
SMKA Johor, Pasir Gudang, had an average grade of 2.04 with 9 excellent candidates (All A’s).
Government-Aided Religious School (SABK) category:
SMA (Arab) An-Nur, Pontian, had an average grade of 1.79 with 5 excellent candidates (All A’s).
Felda School category:
SMK LKTP Maokil, Segamat obtained an average grade of 4.91.
“The Malaysia Education Development Plan, which runs from 2013 to 2025, intends to achieve five outcomes for the Malaysian educational system as a whole.
“Among them is equity which aims to further bridge the achievement gap between urban and rural students, and the achievement of candidates in urban and rural areas according to the value of average grade in 2020 compared to 2019. Based on these achievements, the performance gap between urban and rural candidates has been reduced.”
“I would like to congratulate the candidates who have shown excellence in the SPM examination in 2019 and 2020. I also hope that they can continue this culture of excellence in any field that they will venture into in order to contribute to the development of the country. To the underachievers, I hope they will not give up,” Shahilon said at the end of the statement.
