Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ir. Haji Hasni Mohammad said local councillors in Johor need to have a certain level of legal expertise to ensure that all local government plans and policies are in the right direction.

“… To drive more sustainable development in Johor, the real roles and responsibilities of the councillors need to be enhanced. This is because they are the middle men between the people and the local government administration,” Hasni addressed the Johor councillors in March 2021 in his speech on Executive Talk Programme for Legislation Planning.

In accordance with the changes in state leadership, local authorities through the Council of State, according to the MB will be in phases on 15th April and 23rd Sept 2020, and 207 councillors were selected.

He said the councilors are part of the municipal administrative structure and their acts do not undermine the local authorities’ policies.

“They are also, among others, advisors to local authorities according to their respective professions or expertise and are representatives who would channel people’s complaints, views and feedback related to the services provided by local authorities,” he said.

Hasni also said that councillors served as local authorities’ spokespersons to ensure that the local authorities have heard and agreed to their policies.
