The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is reminding the public once again to be cautious about the prevalence of fake accounts on social media. Here are ways for users to take action when they come across any fake accounts according to MCMC:

Report Button

It’s said that by clicking the Report Fake Account choice offered by the social media platform provider for further review and behaviour based on violations stipulated by Community Standards, the public can help tackle these dubious accounts.

“Such actions are necessary to prevent the spread of bad content such as misleading news, hate speech and provocative content that can threaten national security. While the social media platform providers are actively scanning and verifying the authenticity of user accounts, there are still leakages from them,” the statement said.

Be Wary Over Fake Accounts

Besides that, MCMC said users should still be careful about the presence of fake accounts because at first it often does not display fake or malicious signs, so the provider of the platform gives them fair suspicion before they show signs of bad behaviour.

“Platform providers will find these accounts when their detection system identifies bad behaviour or if there are users who report it to them.

“Preventing fake accounts is one way to stop abuse but other protection should also be given once the content is generated and interactions occur with these fake accounts,” according to MCMC.

MCMC also advised users to be diligent, accountable and stop falling victim to false accounts and misuse of social media networks in this respect.
