100 people took part in Zapin Yok! @B5, an event organised by Yayasan Johor Corporation (Yayasan JCorp) in association with the State Department of Culture and Arts, (JKKN) Johor, and the Johor State Zapin Activist Association (Pe-Zapin), at B5 Johor Street Market, Johor Bahru.
The programme featured a variation of Johor’s Zapin with the concept of ‘Main Zapin’ which is a combination of sketch and theatre in the art of Zapin dance.
Head of Yayasan JCorp, Zaidatul Zurita Abdul Rahman said in a statement from JCorp said that such a programme was held for the first time by Yayasan JCorp in line with its main focus areas of art, culture, and heritage.
Zapin Yok! @B5 is a brand programme of Yayasan JCorp in an effort to realise the aspirations of Johor Corporation (JCorp) to make B5 Johor Street Market, Johor Bahru, as an arts and culture hub in Johor by focusing on various artistic activities including artist performances, handicraft sales and traditional food sales that are popular in Johor”
In addition to inspiring love for Johor’s art and culture, she said it was hoped that the programme’s organisation would create a forum for local art activists to exchange knowledge and experience.
At the event, more than 15 Zapin dances were performed by participants under the auspices of Pe-Zapin such as Zapin Kores; Zapin Tanjung Labuh; Zapin Lapis Batu Putih; Zapin Dayung; Zapin Lenga; Zapin Seri Bunian; Zapin Putar Lam; Zapin Pulau Aur; dan Zapin Tenglu.
A Zapin dance workshop was also held, and over 100 participants from the local community as well as school and university students participated.
There are also other activities such as food & beverage stalls and food trucks in conjunction with the programme.
Meanwhile, Yang Di Pertua Pe-Zapin, Ab Razak Rahmat very much welcomes the collaboration with the JCorp Foundation which is also supported by JKKN.
“As artists, we greatly appreciate and thank the JCorp Foundation for supporting us in further elevating the art of Zapin dance”.
He stated that the programme Zapin Yok! @B5 is more than just a dance performance; it will also provide knowledge to the audience, which will be shared directly by the figure / Adiguru Zapin through elements of theatre and sketches.
B5 Johor Street Market, developed by JCorp and managed by DASB Property Management Sdn Bhd, is a one-stop commercial centre for the local community and tourists, providing business space for local entrepreneurs.
The sincerity of Yayasan JCorp in empowering its arts, culture, and heritage indirectly helps to attract domestic and foreign tourists to B5 Johor Street Market.
Through the organisation of the Johor Traditional Food Festival together with JKKN which took place recently, more than 5,000 visitors came to enjoy various Johor traditional foods such as Mee Rebus, Johor Laksa, and Johor Beriani.
