The artistry of Johor’s traditional weaving came to life as Johor Corporation, through Yayasan Johor Corporation (Yayasan JCorp) and in collaboration with the Johor Heritage Foundation, officially launched Projek Legasi Johor, an initiative dedicated to reviving and celebrating the heritage of Kain Benang Johor as a living symbol of identity and pride.
Carrying the theme “Woven with Legacy, Worn with Identity,” the initiative represents a long-term commitment to preserve Johor’s traditional craftsmanship through innovation, training and creative empowerment. It aims to ensure that the beauty of Kain Benang Johor continues to thrive through a new generation of skilled artisans.
The launch was officiated by Mohd Masni bin Wakiman, District Officer of Johor Bahru, at Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar, marked a significant milestone in Johor’s cultural preservation journey. The unveiling of the Gambus motif showcased the creative synergy between Yayasan JCorp and the Johor Heritage Foundation, underscoring Johor’s commitment to A Legacy of Noble and Exceptional Heritage. This collaboration reflects the state’s dedication to elevating traditional craftsmanship while charting a progressive path for future generations.
In support of the initiative, Yayasan JCorp sponsored five weaving looms and a complete set of processing equipment to enhance the training and production facilities at the Johor Heritage Foundation. Through this collaboration, ten participants selected for the Perintis Johor Intensive Basic Weaving Course received their official offer letters and began their journey as emerging artisans.
Upon completing the programme, outstanding participants will be selected to pursue advanced training at the National Craft Institute to obtain a Level 3 Skills Certificate in Weaving and will also be offered the opportunity to serve as full-time weavers with the Johor Heritage Foundation.
According to Puan Zaidatul Zurita Abdul Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan JCorp, the project represents a bridge between generations, where cultural preservation meets modern creativity.
“This initiative is about more than protecting a traditional craft; it is about safeguarding the spirit, stories, and pride that live within it. Projek Legasi Johor gives young people a platform to transform tradition into opportunity and culture into empowerment,” she said.
She added that Yayasan JCorp’s contribution is part of a broader vision to keep Johor’s cultural legacy alive through collaboration and education.
“At Yayasan JCorp, we believe heritage grows stronger when it is shared and nurtured by the next generation. By supporting training, equipment, and creative development, we are weaving connections that tie culture, community, and livelihood together. Every thread represents continuity, and every artisan is a custodian of our identity,” she shared.
The ceremony also featured a cultural dance performance and a fashion presentation that brought the artistry of Kain Benang Johor to life. Traditional motifs were reimagined into contemporary designs, reflecting how heritage can evolve while retaining its essence.
Projek Legasi Johor forms part of Yayasan JCorp’s Arts, Culture and Heritage focus area, which continues to expand through initiatives such as Pentas Seni Johor and the Art Gallery. Pentas Seni Johor provides a platform for local performers to showcase their talents and promote Johor’s vibrant arts scene, while the Art Gallery serves as a creative space to highlight works by local artists and artisans.
Together, these efforts strengthen Johor’s cultural ecosystem and position the state as a centre for creative heritage and sustainable artistic growth.
The story of Kain Benang Johor is one of patience, artistry and pride. Through Projek Legasi Johor, Yayasan JCorp ensures that this story continues to be told, woven into the hearts of new generations who will carry Johor’s legacy forward with creativity and passion.
