After the month of fasting, we are now in the midst of “open house” season for Hari Raya. Some of us are probably missing the joy of dining at a buffet, being spoilt for choices or maybe you would like to host a dinner for a small group of people, just to join in the fun of festive eating.

In comes DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru inviting guests to embark on a culinary adventure across Malaysia with its latest campaign, “Malaysian Flavours Through 13 States” – a weekday dinner buffet where you can savour every state’s iconic dish prepared in a limited time only.

From 6th April to 3rd July 2025, diners can experience a rotating selection of signature dishes from each of Malaysia’s 13 states, lovingly curated to bring the taste of home to your table.

At the media review, my colleagues and I were raving about Negeri Sembilan’s Itik Salai Masak Lemak – the coconut broth combined with turmeric and chillies that erupt with flavours on your tongue, with the smoked duck slices, paired well with fluffy jasmine white rice.

Going a little further up, enjoy the perfect wet spring rolls or “Popiah Basah”, an iconic, savoury, soft and delectable dish hailing from the land of the pearl, Pulau Pinang. You know it’s so good when one of the guest’s child had her fill of only that the entire dinner time; so engrossed of its taste.

Johor’s own dish, the ‘Botok-Botok Ikan Tenggiri’ a fish marinated in spices, baked and steamed with plenty of herbs wrapped together in banana leaf, made its delightful entry in the dining hall, serving an unforgettable traditional taste to go with your plate of rice or just on its own.

The local’s adventure did not stop there; the dessert’s section has the best of kuih-muih along interesting Steamed Cassava to go with Sweetened Coconut Milk, a sweet dish from the northern peninsular. Plenty of french pastries are also there to accompany the local delights.

To end the session, get yourself a cup of piping hot, fresh from the pull, Teh Tarik, to round up or your Malaysian gastronomy adventure from its very own stall that mimics the olden days’ hawker.

Running Sundays to Thursdays from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM, the buffet is priced at RM128 nett per adult, RM88 nett per senior citizen, and RM64 nett per child.

The Malaysian Flavours Through 13 States weekday dinner buffet will follow a rotational menu, beginning with Johor dishes which just ended, and continues with Pahang (13-17 April), Penang (20-24 April), Kedah (27 April – 1 May), and Negeri Sembilan (4-8 May), and Terengganu (11-15 May). Melaka’s specialities will be featured from 18 to 22 May, followed by Perlis (25-29 May), Selangor (1-5 June), and Kelantan (8-12 June).

Perak takes the spotlight from 15 to 19 June, while Sabah (22-26 June) and Sarawak (29 June – 3 July) conclude the series with bold East Malaysian favourites.
