Overall Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2022 champions, the Johor contingent is aiming for a top three finish with a target of 60 gold medals at the 21st SUKMA in Sarawak next month.

Chef de mission (CDM) Datuk Pandak Ahmad stated that the Johor contingent will compete in all contested events except squash.

“As the overall champion of the previous edition of SUKMA, we face a significant challenge to defend the title, especially since the canoe sport, which has become the gold standard, was not contested this time.

“It is certain that the hosts have their own strategy to capitalise on the opportunity to host the 21st SUKMA, in addition to facing fierce competition from the Selangor, Terengganu, and Federal Territories contingents,” he stated.

Johor emerged as the overall champion at the 20th SUKMA in Kuala Lumpur, winning 77 gold medals, 23 of which came from the Canoe event.

Pandak stated that the Johor contingent’s gold medal targets are athletics events, archery, martial arts, and boxing in order to meet the goal of 60 gold medals.

The 21st SUKMA will feature a total of 599 athletes, who are expected to depart for Sarawak on August 16th, with the football team flying earlier on August 11th.

The Johor contingent’s camp is located at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in Kuching, with 12 events taking place in Miri, Mukah, Betong, and Bintulu.
