Strengthening Economic, Social and Trade Relations between Johor and Qatar

The meeting highlighted Johor as a major connecting hub with neighbouring countries in SEA with a potential of becoming an economic hub offering a wide range of investment opportunities

The Johor State Government delegation together with Johor Menteri Besar, Dato Onn Hafiz had the opportunity to hold a fruitful discussion with HE Dr Ahmad Al Sayed, Minister of Foreign Trade of Qatar at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Qatar.

This meeting is part of efforts to strengthen economic and trade relations between Johor and countries in the Middle East, especially Qatar, which has great potential in the field of investment and development.

Onn Hafiz shared about the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) which has the potential to become a major economic hub connecting Johor with neighboring countries and the Southeast Asian region as a whole. JS-SEZ offers a wide range of investment opportunities in various sectors, including development, tourism, trade, and technology.

“Qatar is showing a high interest in investing in Johor and is ready to introduce JS-SEZ to the main investors in Qatar and their international network which will certainly open up great opportunities for investment and strategic cooperation between the two countries,” said Onn Hafiz.

With this collaboration, Johor will also get a higher exposure at the international level where it will bring benefits to the Johor state with more job opportunities and facilities that will be created.

“Hopefully with all these efforts, we can pave the way for Johor to move forward in creating a brighter future for the state and witness Johor as an economic hub that is recognized globally,” he added.

Johor MB and delegates had the opportunity to accompany His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Ismail, who was invited by His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, to hold a meeting to discuss various economic and social cooperation opportunities between Johor and Qatar, on the 8th of January 2025.

This meeting is part of the proactive efforts by HRH Tunku Ismail in pioneering a new way to improve Johor’s economic position at the global level. “It is a proactive effort to create economic waves and opportunities for Johor at a global level,” shared Onn Hafiz.

Meanwhile, an agreement in principle for a partnership between the French Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain FC (PSG) and JDT was reached during a meeting between HRH Tunku Ismail, the Regent of Johor, and the owner of Johor Darul Ta’zim FC. The delegation was led by Daniel Markham, the Chief of Staff to PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

A multi-club cooperation with football teams owned by Qatar Sports Investments, the growth of grassroots football, infrastructure, branding, and the exchange of knowledge and technology are some of the topics covered.
