Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel’s Cafe BLD brings nostalgia to this year’s fasting month’s buffet which is apparent in its theme, ‘Sajian Tradisi Ramadan Iftar Buffet’.
During the media preview, I was drawn to the outside area, which was bustling with activity, much like a ‘kenduri,’ or Malay feast. A line of freshly prepared dishes on the big wok atop the simple drum as a stand transports me back to the kampung I left years ago. Countres serving hot from the cooker charred carrot cake, grilled seafood, satay, and, of course, the star of every buffet, a massive lamb, are directly opposite the traditional dishes. A stall dedicated to Malaysia’s absolute favourite beverage, teh tarik, is located near the end of the line.
I get plate after plate of food, just like at a traditional feast, and my favourite is the lovely baked Portuguese giant fish, which surprisingly complements my serving of roast lamb slices and Middle Eastern-inspired rice. Feeling a little guilty about my carbohydrate intake, I get myself some vegetables by making pasembor to my liking and pick up some fresh fruits in the dessert section.
Of course, I just had to have the sensational Sarawakian layered cakes, some sweet local cakes served in the bamboo tray and my favourite pastry, the cream puffs, to end my fun, flavorful feast.
