The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) hosted a free public web-seminar, discussing the main topic of Championing Youth for Climate Adaptation: Building A Resilient Future for Malaysia.
Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards (IMSHA) winner, Dr Serina Rahman, Co-Founder and Principal Advisor of Kelab Alami cum lecturer of Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore is made one of the panelists.
This webinar’s takeaways were to empower the younger generation to understand climate risks in Malaysia, hear inspiring stories of young leaders taking action on climate with the audience ranging from youth groups, university students, local communities, civil servants, NGOs, volunteer groups and climate/environmental professionals.
Associate Professor Dr Sharina Abdul Halim, Deputy Director of Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia spoke of Understanding Climate Change: What’s at Risk and introduces the audience to Climate Resilient Development (CRD) which is the process of implementing greenhouse gas mitigation and adaptation measures to support sustainable development including the options and barriers.
Dr Serina discussed the topic of Making a Difference for Climate Change Adaptation and presented examples from Kelab Alami with her thoughts on the future of seafood. She shared about Kelab Alami’s efforts to empower community with environmental education and awareness from within through the establishment of citizen science, which then help manage community-led conservation area.
Jasmin Irisha Jim Ilham, Programme Officer of Climate and Environment from UNICEF Malaysia then speaks about Addressing Vulnerabilities and Strengthening Resilience of Young People: Adaptation in Action where she shared how children and young people are least responsible for climate change yet face the brunt of the crisis, calling for children and young people to be at the heart of climate action.
