The annual signature robotic competition, Petrosains RBTX Challenge returns in 2024, marking its sixth edition. Organised by Petrosains, PETRONAS’ social impact arm for powering knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, registration for this year’s competition opens from 6th May to 31st July 2024.

Since its inception in 2018, the Petrosains RBTX Challenge has empowered over 50,000 individuals, both domestically and internationally. With more than 4,700 participations involving over 14,000 participants, the competition has enabled robotics enthusiasts to learn, discover, and battle their robotic creations on a common platform.

A launch event was held, and officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chang Lih Kang, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Petrosains Sdn. Bhd., Ezarisma Azni Mohamad.

Ezarisma Azni highlighted the competition’s inclusive approach to STEM learning, adding that, ”Building on the success of previous years, Petrosains RBTX Challenge will continue to maintain its three core categories; Robo Tracer, Robo Sumo, and Innovation – with eight sub-categories, all under the theme of sustainability. This overarching focus highlights PETRONAS’ commitment to fostering innovation that aligns with environmental stewardship and societal well-being.”

”This year, artificial intelligence (AI) will also be featured prominently in the Robo Tracer category, offering participants an opportunity to delve deeper into cutting-edge technologies. This addition not only enriches the competition but also equips participants with vital skills relevant to the rapidly evolving landscape of robotics and AI technologies.

Furthermore, aiming to uplift the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia’s indigenous communities, the Innovation category this year introduces a new sub-category namely “Indigenous Culture & Technology”, specially designed for indigenous students in Malaysia, emphasising digital inclusion and community development while honouring knowledge and promoting environmental sustainability. By embracing these advancements and incorporating them into the competition framework, participants are encouraged to innovate and contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable future,” he shared.

Petrosains RBTX Challenge is structured to provide participants with basic designing, coding, and sensor training in robotic development and to educate the public on the evolving digital era driven by the convergence of advanced technologies such as robotics, AI and Internet of Things (IoT).

Participating teams will be required to submit video entries showcasing their robots completing challenges or presenting innovative ideas. The Grand Finals of Petrosains RBTX Challenge 2024 will be held in October 2024. Winners stand to receive cash prizes worth more than RM48,000.00, as well as e-certificates from Petrosains.
