Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir, the top management of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and its agencies extended the PETRA Squad South Zone tour to Johor.
The first round of tours led by PETRA’s Minister cum Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, started in Melaka on 16th November 2024, followed by the two-day PETRA Squad South Zone to Johor trip, which started on 11th January and ended on 12th January 2025.
The tour’s main objectives were to examine recent advancements in the energy sector, particularly in the area of renewable energy, and to keep an eye on the enforcement agendas of the water and energy sectors as well as the sewerage industry.
The PETRA Squad’s first location visit was at ChargeEV Tangkak Pitstop to see the integration efforts of the development of the ChargeEV charging station between the Tangkak District Council and the electric vehicle (EV) charging service provider.
The stop facility is currently in the final regulatory compliance process where a public license application to the Energy Commission is being done before the testing and commissioning (T&C) process by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) can be implemented.
The second location of the tour was Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), Kulai, to inspect the installation of a rooftop solar system with a capacity of 2.6999 kWp under the Solar for Self-consumption (SelCo) Programme introduced by the government.
The installation of a rooftop solar system at this shopping mall is one of the largest in Malaysia.
This installation is estimated to generate and produce 3,290 MWh of green electricity supply per year with an estimated bill savings of around RM1.5 million, which is further estimated to reduce the reclaimed land of approximately 3 hectares (6 acres) of land as well as carbon avoidance of 2,604 metric tonnes per year.
Continuing the field survey for the energy sector, the PETRA Squad delegation also conducted a survey of Southern Power Generation at Sultan Ibrahim Power Station, Pasir Gudang, which is the world’s first commercial power plant using the most efficient gas turbine technology manufactured by General Electric (GE).
PETRA Squad then stopped by the Senibong Switching Station (230 kV), which is the Interconnection Station between Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore with a capacity of 1,000 MW. “Power Exchange” between Malaysia and Singapore refers to the trade of electricity, especially green energy, through the Energy Exchange Malaysia (ENEGEM) platform, which allows Malaysian energy producers to sell renewable energy directly to Singapore through a bidding process, with Sembcorp Power acting as the importer of electricity in Singapore.
This exchange is part of the Cross-Border Electricity Sales for Renewable Energy Scheme (CBES). RE) initiated by the Malaysian government, which facilitates the integration of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).
Monitoring the enforcement agenda was also the focus of the PETRA Squad’s field trip to Johor, where a review of the Smart Energy Metering installation initiative under TNB was held at Pencawang Dato Onn Perjiranan 4 No. 1, Bandar Dato Onn, Johor Bahru.
On the second day, the PETRA Squad Southern Zone delegation to Johor conducted a review of the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sewage Treatment Plant at Jalan Hijau, Taman Pelangi, and then to Dewan Semai Bakti, FELDA Ulu Penggeli, Kluang for the People’s Together Programme @ PETRA Squad.
