The Ministry of Communications through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has established a strategic collaboration with the Johor State Government through the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) building.

The MoU exchange ceremony was witnessed by His Royal Highness, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Regent Sultan of Johor, Dato’ Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi, Menteri Besar of Johor, and Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications.

This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand Internet network coverage, and increase the level of public awareness of cybersecurity and digital literacy.

MCMC in its statement, said through this partnership, a number of new projects will be carried out, such as the creation of digital infrastructure, the extension of 5G coverage in key locations, the building of public capacity, and the execution of cybersecurity initiatives.

An estimated RM300 million will need to be set aside over the course of the next two years in order to carry out this cooperative project and guarantee that its goals are met.

Through the Johor Safe City initiative, the Ministry of Communications and MCMC will expand Internet access, particularly to promote the use of mobile applications by the general public. This will be achieved by installing new public Wi-Fi for visitors’ and the general public’s safe use.

In order to promote the use of smart technology applications and artificial intelligence (AI) by government agencies, the private sector, and the general public throughout Johor, this collaboration also entails expanding mobile coverage and communications.

Johor’s economic and digital transformation will be supported and accelerated by the rollout of 5G coverage in high-impact areas, such as public transport hubs and sports facilities, industrial areas, tourist destinations, and data centre project areas.

In Southeast Asia, Johor has been identified as the data centre location with the fastest rate of growth. By 2027, Johor’s total data centre capacity is anticipated to have surpassed 2.7 gigawatts (GW).

Given the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone’s (JS-SEZ) potential to attract new investments to Johor, this partnership will also guarantee that the JS-SEZ region has robust, reliable, and extensive digital infrastructure and Internet access to facilitate trade and business growth.

By means of this Memorandum of Understanding, MCMC will assist the State of Johor in creating a model of collaboration between the federal and state governments, promoting the growth of a high-tech national ecosystem, and advancing technological and economic transformation.

Also present were Johor State Secretary Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Hj Azmi Bin Rohani, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee Chairman, Ir. Ts. Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.
