The importance of developing modern agriculture and the application of smart technology in the agricultural sector were among the matters discussed during the courtesy visit of HE Vanu Gopala Menon, Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia at the Menara Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladahan (LPP), Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, 16 February 2023.

“This meeting is seen as crucial for discussing bilateral agricultural cooperation between the two countries, particularly agro-food trade”, said Mohamad Sabu, Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) through a statement. He also stated that food supply stability is a global issue that must be addressed jointly by Malaysia and Singapore.

At the same time, Malaysia invited Singapore to collaborate in increasing food supply through investment in Malaysia’s modern agricultural sector. Singapore is said to be willing to share its smart agriculture technology and expertise.

“Singapore is an important agricultural trading partner for Malaysia. For the record, from January to October 2022, the value of trade in the agricultural sector between Malaysia and Singapore amounted to RM15.99 billion,” he said in a statement.

“Both countries are ready to give a commitment to strengthen bilateral trade in the field of agriculture in line with the goal of securing a sustainable and continuous source of food supply.”

The Deputy Secretary General (Policy) of MAFS, senior MAFS officers, and representatives of the Office of the High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore in Malaysia also attended the meeting.
