Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim recently visited Doha, Qatar with a team led by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
“We had meetings with a number of important figures in Qatar while we were there. Among them was Qatar Airways, which expressed interest in establishing their maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at Senai International Airport,” said Onn Hafiz.
“Qatar Airways is requesting for more information from the state government especially in terms of logistics and we have sent all the necessary documents and data required by them on 13th January,” he added, after meeting state civil servants 16th January, for the strategy workshop of the Johor Economic Transformation Programme.
According to Onn Hafiz, before deciding to establish a facility at Senai International Airport, Qatar Airways would be able to conduct a physical study with the available data and papers.
This was a smart initial move on the part of the state government to encourage expansion in Johor’s logistics industry, particularly at Senai International Airport. Additionally, he stated that RM2bil has been allotted by the federal government to upgrade Senai International Airport, which is roughly 22 kilometers from Johor Bahru city.
“The specifics are still being finalised, but we have plans to expand and upgrade Senai International Airport soon,” he added.
