63 years of being officially independent, Malaysia has advanced to becoming a developing nation with a long stretch of achievements recognised worldwide that every citizen can take pride of. In the effort of making this Merdeka special and inclusive, Care United Johor Bahru (CUJB) shared the celebratory spirit with underprivileged families at Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Melana Indah in Taman Perling through their food aid.
A total of 100 families received the aid following strict SOP guidelines due to the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) in place that involved the recipients, CUJB members and the public to practise social distancing and avoiding crowds to ensure safety for all. The recipients were residents of the government apartment blocks and consisted of Malay, Chinese and Indian races with the impoverished making up the majority of the recipients (37%) followed by single mothers (34%), chronic health condition (17%), the disabled (9%) and senior citizens (3%).
During the event, CUJB’s President, Datuk Florence Goh and Vice President, Melanie Cheong led the team of members in distributing Food Aid to the families, while the disabled recipients had their hampers delivered directly to their homes by CUJB members.
RM5,500 was allocated for this round of food aid, and each hamper given to the recipient was valued at RM55.00 containing everyday essentials such as rice, vermicelli noodles, canned sardines, evaporated milk, cooking oil and beverages.
Grateful for the continued support from donors to extend aid to the underprivileged, CUJB welcomes any contributions from organisations and the public to ensure the needy could be continuously assisted while mentioning that donations made through them are tax-exempted with all donations of RM51 and above being tax deductible.
