The Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced earlier this week that the public can apply for a physical printout of a Malaysian Driving Licence (LMM) without submitting proof of overseas travel.
According to reports, the decision was based on input from Malaysians who wish to travel and require a hard copy of their LMM in order to drive overseas.
Here is what we know so far:
No Need for Overseas Travel Proof to Apply
Drivers can apply for a physical LMM card by showing proof of leaving the country, such as a flight ticket, in accordance with existing regulations.
“The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been instructed to no longer ask for proof of leaving the country as a measure to reduce bureaucracy,” the statement stated.
Applications Are Available at all JPJ Counters and UTC Nationwide
Applications for physical prints of LMM can be made at any JPJ counter or the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) nationwide, with a printing fee of RM20 for citizens and RM100 for non-citizens.
Free of Charge for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons
MOT stated that senior citizens aged 60 and up, Class A and Al licence holders, and Disabled Persons card holders registered with the Department of Social Welfare can continue to receive physical LMM prints for free.
Digital Licences Still Available with the Physical Ones
“Drivers who choose the LLM digital card will continue to be able to access a free digital driving card which can be renewed via the MyJPJ application without having to go to any office,” according to the statement.
In the meantime, MOT reported that 13 million people have used the MyJPJ Application since the introduction of the digital LMM policy in February 2023, indicating the initiative’s broad public acceptance.
MOT states, “This trend is very encouraging and indicates that users have started to adapt to the digital concept as a more convenient option, where LMM can be renewed online via the MyJPJ application and issued without having to go to the JPJ office.”
