The RM66 million wildlife crossing project in Jalan Kahang-Mersing is scheduled to be completed in February 2028 and is expected to reduce wildlife collisions (roadkill), protecting property and saving road users’ lives.
According to Ling Tian Soon, chairman of the State Health and Environment Committee, the 1.2-kilometer crossing with an eight-meter-high and 200-meter-long flyover will allow wildlife to cross the road through the space under the flyover.
“The Johor State Government is always committed to striking a balance between development, public safety, and the preservation of the state’s natural and wildlife treasures,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ling stated that as of 29 June, the project had progressed by approximately 10.12 percent, and that he had been closely monitoring its progress.
He also urged drivers to exercise caution when passing through wildlife habitats, particularly at night and on routes known to be frequented by wild animals.
A female elephant, estimated to be five years old, has died after being hit by a Perodua Bezza at 2.28 a.m. on Felda Nitar Road in Mersing.
The incident also touched Malaysians’ hearts when an adult elephant, believed to be the elephant’s mother, waited by the elephant’s side for approximately seven hours before the elephant’s carcass was buried.
