The Johor State Government announced a comprehensive funding package totalling RM1.85 million to support education, infrastructure, and community welfare for the Sikh community in Johor for 2026.
The announcement was made by Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, during his speech at Gurdwara Sahib Pontian, celebrating both the auspicious festival and the Gurdwara’s 50th anniversary.
The event was graced by the MB, marking a significant milestone in the state’s continued commitment to its diverse cultural fabric.
During his address, Onn Hafiz Ghazi praised the Sikh community for their unwavering commitment to service.
He emphasised the tradition of langgar (the community kitchen), which serves everyone regardless of race or religion, and recalled the community’s quick response during recent floods.
”I recall that recently, the Johor Sikh community welcomed flood victims. “I am truly touched by this gesture, which exemplifies and strengthens the Bangsa Johor concept,” the Menteri Besar said, adding that the state has contributed nearly RM5 million to the development of Sikhs in Johor since 2022.
Recipient allocation includes Johor Punjabi School Education – RM200,000; Gurdwara Sahib Johor Bahru received RM200,000; Gurdwara Sahib Kluang received RM100,000; Gurdwara Sahib Batu Pahat received RM100,000; Gurdwara Sahib Muar received RM100,000; Gurdwara Sahib Pontian received RM100,000; Gurdwara Sahib Segamat received RM100,000; Johor Sikhs Sports Club received RM200,000; Malaysian Sikh Union (Johor Branch) received RM100,000; and Johor Sikh Association received RM100,000.
Additionally, there is special funding for building Gurdwara Sahib Pontian and Gurdwara Sahib Johor Bahru; each receiving RM300,000 and RM250,000, respectively.
In a statement made by the Johor Sikh Gurdwaras and Sikh NGOs, it was also mentioned that the Johor State Vaisakhi Celebration will now become an annual event on the state calendar, and the 2027 celebration is scheduled to be hosted in Kluang, Johor.
